Grantown has always been a tourist destination since Queen Victoria visited in 1860 and the coming of the railway from the south in 1863. Several grand granite villas and hotels were built to cater for the ever-growing number of tourists that came to stay for extended periods over the summer. Grantown was recommended for the fresh air, the fragrance of the pine trees and the climate.
Today the railway has gone and there are fewer hotels but what remains is a range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.
