Other tours from Grantown-on-Spey around the Highlands
Another popular tour from Grantown is north to the coastline of the Moray Firth. An option here is to visit Cawdor Castle, made famous by Shakespear’s Macbeth followed by visiting Forres, home of Benromach whisky and Red Door gin. Further along the coast are the colourful fishing villages of Findhorn, Burghhead and Lossiemouth with beautiful beaches leading to the town of Elgin. Time here can be spent visiting the famous ruined cathedral or perhaps retail therapy at Johnstons of Elgin Woollen Mill.
The return journey through Speyside follows the River Spey and the Malt Whisky Trail, passing many familiar whisky distilleries: Glen Grant, Glenfiddich, Aberlour, Cardhu, Glenfarclas and Cragganmore which can also be included on a distillery tour.
There is so much to choose from that it’s not possible to combine everything into one day of touring. Let me know ‘your must sees’ and I will compile a bespoke itinerary that shows you the best of the Highlands and Moray, only a stone’s throw from Grantown-on-Spey.
Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, is a great day tour from Grantown
Only a 45 min drive, there are a choice of attractions to visit en route to Inverness.
There’s Tomatin Distillery for a dram of whisky,
followed by the Clava Cairns, 4000 years old Bronze Age burial chambers made famous as Craig na un in the popular TV series ‘Outlander’.
Or I can transport you back in time to 16 April 1746 and the atmospheric Culloden Battlefield, where Jacobite followers of Charles Edward Stuart ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’ were defeated by a British Government army, ending the Highland way of life forever. Here I can take you on a walking tour of the battlefield and explain what led up to the battle, the events of that day and what followed.
Just a short drive onwards to Inverness and free time for shopping, or I can also take you on a guided tour of the city centr.
Options from Inverness are to drive the Great Glen to Loch Ness and perhaps catch a glimpse of her famous resident ‘Nessie’ the Loch Ness Monster. Situated overlooking the loch are the iconic, romantic, ruins of Urquhart Castle, familiar to many from postcards and photos of the loch. Again, I can take you on a tour of the castle before continuing along the shores of Loch Ness to the pretty village of Fort Augusts and the Caledonian Canal.
